We know that this can take time, and that it can take a different amount of time for every person. For this reason, we do not put an upper limit on how long clients can stay with us. Our clinic is nestled in ten acres of beautiful grounds that are free for our clients’ use. We encourage you to take walks, interact with our therapy horses, meditate outdoors or otherwise take advantage of the peaceful and scenic setting. Our quiet, private location provides the ideal backdrop for trauma healing and recovery from a variety of emotional and psychological trauma-related disorders. These disorders may manifest through behaviours like self-harm, substance abuse, depression, anxiety or relationship issues — no matter what you are experiencing, we are here to help you find the root of your worries and to learn to cope in ways that keep you healthy and happy.
Our clients participate in both group and individual therapies; both have particular merits that, together, create a complete healing experience. We offer many different group and individual activities so our clients can experience a range of methods for recovery. Every person has a different background and different needs and concerns, and we have found that individuals benefit from exploring all of our options so they can find therapies that work just for them.
Our options include:
- Somatic experiencing
- Sensorimotor psychotherapy
- Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR)
- Somatic equine therapy
- Internal family systems
- Structural dissociation therapy
- Craniosacral therapy
- Tai chi
- Art therapy
- Nutritional therapy
- Family therapy
Clients at the residential clinic have individual sessions with our trauma treatment specialists three times per week, during which they can address any concerns without outside pressures or interruption. Group sessions are likewise a fundamental part of the treatment programme — the group dynamic optimises clients’ social engagement systems, encourages alternative perspectives and promotes client confidence in self-expression. Group sessions are offered twice per day.
Our core programme at the residential clinic also includes somatic equine involvement therapy, mindfulness, meditation, breathing techniques, yoga, tai chi, and art therapy. All of these generate results in symptom reduction through restoration of the nervous system and as complementary experiential supports to the traditional therapy sessions. Clients are encouraged to explore modalities within our core programme and to utilise our resources creatively for their self-improvement.
Khiron House also complies with the International Society for the Study of Trauma (ISSTD) guidelines (2011) for the treatment of trauma and works with its three-phase model of:
- Symptom reduction and regulation
- Processing traumatic memories
- Consolidation and integration
